Who doesn’t need a little stress relief these days? If you’re feeling overwhelmed and burnt out, practicing self-care with calming essential oils can help. Certain essential oils act as nervines and calmatives, which are known to promote relaxation. This post will help you understand all you need to know to use essential oils for stress-filled moments in your life.

Let’s go over what essential oils are good for de-stressing and get some tips on how to use them.

man showing signs of being stressed

Jasmine essential oil

Jasmine essential oil has a warm, floral aroma that can help to lift spirits, relax the mind, and enhance self-confidence. Research from a 2021 clinical trial suggests that inhaling jasmine essential oil might be effective in calming nerves before surgery.

It’s worth noting that jasmine oil isn’t technically an essential oil, so you might also see it labeled as an absolute. To enjoy the relaxing effects of jasmine, try diluting it with jojoba oil and wearing it as a personal fragrance during stressful situations.

Rose essential oil

While rose essential oil is more commonly known for its uses in skin care, it also offers amazing benefits for your well-being. Its sweet, peaceful aroma can be used in aromatherapy to enhance relaxation and help relieve headaches, which are often triggered by stress. A study published in Natural Product Communications found that subjects felt more relaxed after having Rose essential oil applied to their skin.

Try adding a drop to your nighttime moisturizer or diluting it and adding it to a bath to de-stress after a long day.

Orange essential oil

Cold-pressed from the fresh fruit peel, orange essential oil has a sweet, sunny scent that not only smells good but also promotes calm. This study and this one published in Physiology & Behavior found that diffusing orange essential oil at the dentist’s office helped patients feel more at ease.

Another way to harness the calming, de-stressing properties of this oil is to mix 8 drops with 10 ml of carrier oil—like jojoba, sweet almond, or olive oil—and massage it onto your skin daily. Since orange essential oil is photosensitive, apply the diluted oil to your back or lower chest and throw on a shirt before going outside.

German Chamomile essential oil

Although not as well-known as Roman chamomile oil, German chamomile essential oil boasts some impressive benefits. Used in aromatherapy, it can inspire calm feelings. According to a study published in EXPLORE: The Journal of Science & Healing, participants who inhaled chamomile and lavender essential oils for 30 nights felt more relaxed than those who inhaled distilled water.

Want to put it to the test? Diffuse 3 drops each of lavender and German chamomile oils to help you relax and unwind before bed. For a sweeter, brighter scent, add a few drops of orange essential oil.

Lavender essential oil

Lavender essential oil is one of the most calming and relaxing essential oils for your diffuser. Used in aromatherapy, it can help to calm and soothe the nerves and relieve headaches. A 2011 study on 30 patients found that lavender oil had a soothing, de-stressing effect on participants. Whether you use it in your diffuser or dilute it and add it to a bath, lavender essential oil can help you tackle everyday stresses naturally.

Ylang Ylang essential oil

Another calming oil you should try is Ylang Ylang essential oil, a widely used nervine and calmative in aromatherapy. In a 2008 study, participants who smelled Ylang Ylang felt significantly calmer compared to those exposed to the scent of peppermint oil or no scent at all.

To experience Ylang Ylang’s calming effects, use it in aromatherapy or apply it topically with a carrier oil. Let this sweet, calming oil help you relax and de-stress after a trying day.

Cedarwood essential oil

Commonly used in home remedies for healthy-looking hair, cedarwood essential oil is also loved for its warm, calming aroma. In one study, researchers tested the properties of cedrol—a key component of Cedarwood essential oil. During the experiment, participants inhaled cedrol, and researchers measured changes in their heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing patterns. The results indicated that cedrol had a relaxing effect on the participants.

To harness cedarwood oil’s calming properties, try it with other relaxing oils in a nighttime diffuser blend. You can also dilute it and add it to a roller bottle to help you de-stress from daily challenges on the go.

Patchouli essential oil

When you want to create a calming and peaceful environment during a busy day at work, reach for patchouli essential oil. In a 2020 study, researchers found that inhaling Patchouli oil helped emergency nurses de-stress at the end of a long shift. Use its musky, earthy aroma as a base note for cologne or perfume, or pair it with other calming oils like orange and jasmine in your diffuser to feel calmer and more at peace.

Dos and don’ts when using essential oils for stress

Do:

  • Use only 100 percent pure essential oils.
  • Patch test with one drop diluted in a carrier oil.
  • Practice safe sun exposure after applying photosensitive oils like orange essential oil.

Don’t:

  • Use fragrance oils and expect to get the same benefits as essential oils.
  • Apply undiluted essential oils to your skin.
  • Use more drops than recommended on the essential oil label.

Do any essential oils help relieve anxiety?

people clasping each other's hands to comfort one another

While the essential oils above can help in managing everyday stresses and promoting relaxation, they’re best used in combination with other stress-management techniques. If your anxiety or stress feels overwhelming, persistent, or disrupts your daily life, it’s crucial to consider professional support.

Seeking guidance from a medical or psychiatric expert ensures you’re on the right path for managing stress effectively. Remember, taking care of your well-being involves a holistic approach, which might include therapy, medical advice, and self-care rituals. So, while essential oils are a valuable tool in your relaxation toolkit, they’re just one part of a comprehensive approach to your mental well-being.

A stuffy nose, hacking cough, and sore throat—we’ve all been there. When you’re in the throes of a cold, it’s only natural to seek out every remedy for relief. While there’s no instant cure for the common cold, you may find some from essential oils for coughs and colds. These oils can be inhaled to reduce cough and cold symptoms or applied topically to provide much-needed relief from headaches and muscle pain.

Let’s review some of the best essential oils for coughs and colds and how to use them.

Sacred Frankincense essential oil

Sacred Frankincense essential oil is a type of Frankincense oil that comes from the resin of Boswellia sacra trees in Oman. It has a soft, woodsy, slightly sweet aroma and includes the naturally occurring constituent boswellic acid. A 2022 clinical trial published in Inflammopharmacology demonstrated the effectiveness of a Boswellia extract formulation—enriched with boswellic acid—in improving cough symptoms.

Recognized by Health Canada, sacred frankincense essential oil can be used in aromatherapy to relieve coughs and colds. It also acts as a nervine and calmative to enhance relaxation while you rest and recover. Try diffusing this oil throughout the day or diluting it and applying it topically to experience its benefits.

Eucalyptus essential oil

One of the best essential oils for coughs and colds, Eucalyptus comes in three common varieties: Eucalyptus radiata, Eucalyptus globulus, and Eucalyptus blue oils. All three are commonly used in aromatherapy to help relieve muscle pain, headaches, coughs, and colds. The main constituent in eucalyptus oils is cineole, also known as eucalyptol. In one study published in Respiratory Research, patients who received cineole treatment for six months experienced a significant improvement in how they felt.

To experience its benefits through steam inhalation, try this simple trick: Soak a washcloth in warm water and add 5 drops of eucalyptus essential oil. Place the infused washcloth in the corner of your shower, away from direct water contact. As you shower, breathe in the soothing and cooling eucalyptus-infused steam for a refreshing and aromatic experience. Alternatively, mix 4 drops of Eucalyptus essential oil with a teaspoon of carrier oil and rub it onto your chest and throat.

Lavender essential oil

Loved for its calming aroma and skin-loving benefits, lavender essential oil also offers some surprising wellness benefits. Recognized by Health Canada, it’s recommended for use in aromatherapy to promote relaxation and alleviate headaches, coughs, and colds.

This versatile oil is perfect for diffusing or diluting and applying topically at bedtime to help calm your body and mind. Alternatively, you can mix it with body wash or bath gel and add it to a warm, comforting bath.

Rosemary essential oil

Rosemary essential oil isn’t just a favorite for skin and hair treatments—it can also help when you’re feeling under the weather. Like eucalyptus essential oil, it contains eucalyptol, a compound associated with cough and cold relief in studies such as the one mentioned above.

Interested in trying it out? Dilute 1 drop of rosemary essential oil with a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba oil, and apply it to your head, neck, chest, or under your nose.

Tea Tree essential oil

While Tea Tree essential oil is more widely known for its use in pedicures and skin care routines, it can also be used topically or inhaled to reduce the symptoms of coughs and colds, according to Health Canada. That’s why it’s a common ingredient in natural chest and vapour rubs.

To experience its effects, dilute a drop with a carrier oil and rub it onto your chest. Alternatively, add a few drops of essential oil to your diffuser and breathe in the clean, purifying scent.

Cypress essential oil

Steam-distilled from the branches of cypress trees, cypress essential oil has a refreshing, evergreen aroma that can help relieve coughs and colds.

To use it in a soothing compress, dilute 2 drops with a carrier oil and add it to a bottle of warm water. Shake the mixture to combine, and then soak your compress with it, squeezing out any excess water before applying it to your forehead. Alternatively, diffuse cypress oil in your space for a refreshing aromatic experience.

Peppermint essential oil

With its cool, herby aroma, peppermint essential oil creates a refreshing experience when inhaled or diffused. It can also be used topically in aromatherapy to help relieve coughs and colds. One study revealed that a spray containing peppermint, eucalyptus globulus, rosemary, and other essential oils effectively reduced the severity of patients’ symptoms, including coughing.

Thanks to its natural menthol content, peppermint essential oil also provides a soothing, cooling sensation to the skin. Just be sure to dilute it before using it in a spray or chest and throat massage.

Thyme essential oil

Another great essential oil for coughs and colds is thyme essential oil, which is steam-distilled from the plant’s flowers, leaves, and stems. It contains thymol, a compound shown to reduce coughing, according to a 2013 study published in the European Respiratory Journal.

Diffuse Thyme essential oil in your home or use it topically with a dilution to enjoy its warm, spicy, and herbaceous aroma, which provides natural relief from cough and cold symptoms.

  • Reduce blue light in the evening. Ideally, turn off all screens at least an hour before bed to signal the brain to start releasing sleep hormones.
  • Do the same things every night before bed. Whatever your routine is, sticking to it will help your mind and body wind down!
  • Sleep in a cool, dark room. Put up blackout curtains, use a sleep mask, and cover small lights like wall chargers.

Whatever it is, adding some essential oils to your daily routines is a simple way to freshen things up!

YL tip: Have more than one routine that needs a revamp? Start small and work on one routine at a time to avoid overwhelm and burnout.

The best smells of winter—simplified https://www.youngliving.com/blog/canada/the-best-smells-of-winter-simplified/ https://www.youngliving.com/blog/canada/the-best-smells-of-winter-simplified/#respond Thu, 05 Jan 2023 23:15:55 +0000 https://www.youngliving.com/blog/canada/?p=8100 While many holiday-scented candles and air fresheners contain harmful chemicals that can pollute your home, the Simplified by Jacob + Kait™ winter blends are made exclusively with good, clean, sustainably sourced ingredients. Learn all about these festive scents and how to use them!

Ahh, the scents of the holidays…warm sugar cookies, candy canes, a crackling fire, and freshly fallen snow. Sometimes the scent is enough to bring you back to another time and place. If you want to take your senses on a trip down holiday memory lane, look no further than the Simplified by Jacob + Kait™ Winter Collection.

Brought to you by Jacob and Kaitlyn Young in partnership with the D. Gary Young Research Institute, this festive collection comes with three limited-time scents for the most wonderful time of the year.

But how do Young Living’s winter-inspired scents stack up to your favorite holiday candles and air fresheners? Let’s find out.

Simplified winter essential oil blends vs candles and air fresheners

Here are five reasons to ditch synthetic scents this season for the Simplified by Jacob + Kait winter blends.

1. Clean ingredients

Most commercial candles are made from paraffin wax because it’s a cheap byproduct of gasoline production. While soy and beeswax candles are cleaner, they still have some drawbacks when it comes to safety and vegan friendliness.

Air fresheners aren’t a clean alternative either, as they’re made from fragrance oils dissolved in alcohol. Not to be confused with essential oils, fragrance oils are manufactured in a lab to mimic scents found in nature.

The Simplified winter blends, on the other hand, are made exclusively with good, clean ingredients. The only contents you’ll find in these blends are premium essential oils, plant extracts, and fractionated coconut oil.

SimplifiedWinterBundle

2. Sustainability and eco-friendliness

Since paraffin wax candles contain a byproduct of fossil fuel, they’re highly unsustainable. Soy wax candles are more environmentally friendly, but they’re still not the most sustainable option due to deforestation concerns in the soybean industry.

As for air fresheners, they can contain harsh chemicals that pollute the environment—not very green of them!

That brings us to the Simplified winter blends, which are made with sustainably sourced and naturally derived ingredients.

3. Longevity

While different types of candles vary in burn time, generally, an 8-ounce candle will last up to 50 hours. Plug-in air fresheners have a longer lifespan, with some cartridges claiming to last a month or more. Since the longevity of essential oils is a bit trickier to determine, we’ve done the math for you.

  • Each 10 ml blend holds approximately 170 drops of oil.
  • 170 drops / 5 drops in your diffuser each time = 34 diffusing sessions.
  • 34 sessions × 8 hours of diffuser run time = up to 272 hours of diffusing for each blend.

That’s a lot of bang for your buck!

Pink Champagne essential oil blend

4. Safety

Any time you have an open flame, you also have a risk of a fire hazard. This makes air fresheners and essential oils a less risky option compared to candles. However, air fresheners still carry the risk of polluting your indoor air, which means the Simplified blends come out on top once more.

5. Cruelty-free certification

When shopping for cruelty-free candles, you’ll want to avoid any with beeswax on the ingredients list. Soy and paraffin wax candles—as well as air fresheners—don’t normally contain animal-derived ingredients, but they may be manufactured by brands that test on animals.

That’s where the Simplified winter blends win again. They are cruelty free, vegan friendly, and made with gluten-free ingredients to boot!

Between family gatherings, travel, and financial pressures, the holidays can be a stressful time—and these are only some of the hurdles people face this time of year. For some, it can get even more complicated. If you have lost a family member or loved one during this time, it can also trigger feelings of grief, depression, and anxiety.

Feeling emotionally stable and grounded is essential during this time of year. Here are our suggestions for success during the holiday season.

12 ways to support your emotional wellness this holiday season

1. Prioritize your wellness

With all of the extra pressures and changes in schedules, it can be tempting to abandon your wellness routine during the holidays—but staying focused on self-care is key to feeling good. Taking time off from work, exercising, eating well, getting a good night’s rest, and finding time for yourself are great ways to stay grounded.

Blog_Mental Wellness Challenge_Header_FR_Slider

2. Maintain a good schedule

You can sometimes overextend yourself with the demands of parties and social gatherings. You don’t have to attend every party, so plan for the important ones and be willing to stay home when your health requires it.

3. Participate on your own terms

You can often feel like you must stay for the duration of every event you attend, but this may run counter to what your mind and body need. Do what feels right for you and let the host know how long you can visit ahead of time.

4. Practice mindfulness

Focusing on the present moment is a great way to remain calm. If you find yourself experiencing interpersonal conflict, look for ways to be mindful, grounded, and intentional about how you navigate those feelings. Meditate each day with your favorite Young Living essential oil or blend to stay present and relaxed.

Woman Meditating

5. Create a safe space

Make a comfortable area where you feel safe in your bedroom or any room in your home. Diffusing Young Living essential oils is a great way to find a moment of calm. Have conversations with people who are supportive and affirming and understand that you do not have to have conversations about unresolved issues.

6. Get plenty of rest

Sleep is one of the most important parts of your health. If you tend to stay up later during the holidays and not get adequate rest, that lack of sleep can affect everything from your GI system health to your immune system.

Woman sleeping

7. Avoid over-celebrating with alcohol; drink in moderation or not at all

There are lots of cliches about holiday parties that go off the rails. Be sure to keep a level head and stay clear of chaos. Alcohol can be relaxing, but it is a central nervous system depressant that can make it difficult to regulate emotions.

8. Practice practical coping skills

Use coping methods that work for you. Exercise, yoga, and meditation are great examples, but choose whatever works best for you to stay focused and calm. Practice daily to stay on top of your emotional wellness through the holiday season.

9. Find some downtime

It’s easy to overextend yourself for events and gatherings. Schedule some downtime each day so you have time to relax and enjoy yourself.

10. Stay on track with your supplements

Taking supplements to support overall health is essential. Traveling and being out of your own environment can be stressful and impact your body. Make sure to stay consistent with supplements so your body gets the key nutrients it needs. Products like NingXia Red® beverage, Life 9® probiotic, and Master Formula™ multinutrient complex can help.

supplements

11. Get a massage or a Raindrop™ bodywork session

Massage is one of the best ways to unwind, and a Raindrop Technique™ bodywork session is a highly beneficial way to show yourself some extra love and care.

12. Create new traditions

Honoring family traditions is important, but you can also create new ones. Creating a new tradition that is fun and sustainable is a great way to prioritize your mental health and wellness.

The holidays are a wonderful time to connect with family and friends. As you enjoy these times, stay on track with your emotional wellness and continue to use Young Living products to provide support.

Do you know the differences between clonal lavender and population lavender? Did you know that Young Living shares a fascinating history with lavender and that we use both species to create the Lavender essential oil so many of us rely on each day? Buckle up, because it’s story time!

Young Living and saving French lavender

Young Living’s relationship with this beloved essential oil goes back to 1985, when Young Living Founder D. Gary Young brought lavender seeds back from France so he could grow his own. France boasts a rich, 100-year history of growing very fragrant lavender. Gary began growing lavender on a quarter-acre lot in Spokane, Washington, USA, in 1988. Years later, when disease killed off much of France’s unique lavender species, called population lavender or Lavandula angustifolia, Gary brought back seeds to help restore the plant and replenish France’s lavender fields.

Young Living Mona Farm Lavender Fields

What makes clonal lavender and population lavender different?

There are many species of lavender plants, and among them are clonal lavender and population lavender. But how different can they be? Let us list the ways.

When you think of clonal lavender, remember that it’s:

  • Produced from stem cuttings
  • Uniform in shape and size
  • Incapable of diversity or evolution
  • The preferred plant for many lavender farms

Population lavender differs from clonal because it:

  • Is grown from seeds
  • Has unique and subtle fragrance differences
  • Grows into unique sizes and shapes
  • Produces essential oil with a delightful variety of aromas

When Gary brought population lavender seeds back from France, he invested in local farmers to produce and grow the best lavender available. While the majority of Young Living’s oil is obtained from population lavender, we also include a variety of clonal lavender to create a rich diversity in our oil that you won’t find outside Young Living.

Features and benefits of lavender

Lavender is often celebrated as the “Swiss Army knife of essential oils” because of its many uses. It served as a go-to oil for thousands of years, with people adding it to their baths, laundry and food. Lavender is a favourite essential oil because of its tranquil aroma when diffused and skin care benefits when applied topically. It also:

  • Promotes feelings of calm and fights occasional nervous tension
  • Helps to support digestive discomfort
  • Can be soothing to the skin after a day in the sun
  • Reduces the appearance of blemishes
  • Diminishes the look or signs of aging

Remember the first time you experienced an essential oil? Maybe someone placed a drop of Peppermint oil into your palms, and after breathing in that cooling sensation, you had to resist the urge to drench yourself in its icy scent. We’ve all gotten a little “essential oil happy” at some point, but properly using these oils can make or break your experience. While many essential oils are safe to use without much precaution, some essential oils—like Peppermint—can cause skin sensitivities if you overdo it. Follow these simple tips and tricks to learn how to keep your skin happy and get the most out of your essential oils.

What causes essential oil reactions, and how can you prevent them?

Many people assume that if they have a reaction to an essential oil, they must be allergic to it. However, that’s not often the case. True essential oil allergies are rare, and reactions are more often the result of improper usage or skin sensitivity.

Here’s how to use essential oils safely, so you can make the most of these powerful little allies.

Young Living essential oils

Pay attention to labels

All of our essential oil bottles are labeled with safety usage information that can help you prevent any mishaps. If an oil label says that it needs dilution when used topically, be sure to follow the necessary dilution requirements.

Disclaimer: When using essential oils around your little ones, you’ll want to dilute even more.

Generally, oils require dilution because they are either photoreactive or “hot.” Photoreactive oils contain compounds that can increase your sensitivity to UV rays and cause a reaction similar to a sunburn. Most citrus essential oils are included in this category. These oils will feature a photosensitivity warning on the label, as well as instructions on how to safely apply these oils to the skin. For photoreactive oils, it’s best to stick to the golden rule of avoiding sunlight or UV rays for up to 12 hours after applying. Read this blog post for more information on photoreactive essential oil safety.

“Hot” oils create a warming or hot sensation when applied to the skin, which can cause skin reactions if not diluted properly. Learn more about these types of oils here.

If your label is worn and illegible or you want to double-check the safety warnings, visit the oil’s product page on our website and you’ll find labels for photosensitivity and dilution under the “safety items” section.

Use only high-quality, unadulterated oils

Some companies mix their essential oils with synthetic ingredients to cut costs or increase shelf life. These additives not only reduce the effectiveness of the oil but can also cause skin irritation or other adverse reactions. If the price tag on an essential oil seems too good to be true, double-check that the label doesn’t include any unwanted ingredients. To learn more, check out this blog post on why high-quality essential oils are worth the money.

Patch test to discover skin sensitivity

We recommend that you patch test prior to your first use of any oil, especially if you tend to have sensitive skin. To perform a patch test, mix 1–2 drops of essential oil with a carrier oil and apply the diluted oil to a patch of skin that does not have hair, such as the forearm. Observe that area of skin over the course of 1–2 hours for any noticeable reaction. While most reactions will happen shortly after use, some may take time to appear, so be sure to continue to monitor your skin for up to 72 hours.

Wash your hands after handling essential oils

While essential oils offer many benefits for your skin, that doesn’t mean you should put them all over your body. Cleaning your hands with soap and water after topical application can help you keep oil from getting where you don’t want it, such as in your eyes.

Remember that oil and water don’t mix

Some resources suggest diluting the oil with water if you think you’re having a reaction, but water actually drives oil further into the skin. Never use water in an attempt to flush oil off of the skin, as this may increase discomfort. If you experience a hot or burning sensation, have feelings of discomfort and irritation, or develop a rash, saturate the affected area immediately with V-6™ Vegetable Oil Complex or another carrier oil like olive oil to dilute the oil. Follow up by washing the area well with mild soap and water. If needed, apply more carrier oil and a cool compress to soothe any irritation.

If your reaction is severe, seek medical help or call your doctor.

While essential oils are well loved for their simple application, our product safety guidelines can help you develop habits that will keep you safe and avoid any potential reactions.

Essential oils are an investment in your health and well-being. Learning the dos and don’ts of storing them is just one important way to protect your wellness investment and maximize their benefits.

How to properly store essential oils

Whether you’ve just jumped into essential oils or have a longtime collection you’ve been meaning to organize, these tips for properly storing your favourite products will keep your house happy and your health prioritized!

Keep the bottle lids on tight

A tight lid prevents oxidation, air, or water from getting inside the bottle.

  • Less contact with air allows the oil to retain its properties. Frequent and prolonged exposure to air can alter consistency, smell, and properties of the oil.
  • Closing lids tightly also stops oil from evaporating.

YL tip: The plastic fitment on the bottle allows the oil to escape one drop at a time and also helps keep air and water out. Be sure to leave it on the bottle!

Avoid heat and direct sunlight

  • Too much heat or sunlight can impact the quality of the oil.
  • Both heat and sunlight can change the chemical composition of the oil.
  • Too much heat can cause the oil to evaporate more quickly, making it less effective.
  • Too much sun can deteriorate the oil.

YL tip: Keep essential oils in a closet or drawer and avoid leaving them in your car. A good rule of thumb is to keep oils in a cool, dark place.

How to store essential oils for travelling

How to display essential oils

You love your oils and you’re not afraid to show it! Display them in your home with a stylish shelving unit along with a potted plant or chic decor. Be sure to keep them away from sunlight and enjoy an eye-pleasing display of your fave always-on-hand oils!

Get your questions answered

Have questions about storing your oils, keeping the quality consistent over time, and getting the most out of each little bottle? Here are some frequently asked questions:

1. Can you keep essential oils in the fridge?

Some essential oil lovers swear by putting their oils in the fridge. It isn’t so much the lower temperature that matters—oils do not need to be kept that cold—but the consistent climate. Your fridge stays the same temperature day and night, which helps preserve the oil. If you don’t want your oil to be cold when you use it, be sure to remove it about 1–2 hours before you’ll need it so the oil can return to room temperature. Once you’re finished using the oil, put it back in the fridge so it can return to a consistent temperature.

2. Is it okay to freeze essential oils?

Putting essential oils in the freezer is perfectly safe. The consistent temperature and lack of light will help to preserve your oils. There are some oils—like RoseThyme, and others—that may have natural components that solidify or crystallize in the freezer. If your oils do this, simply allow them to thaw before you use them by keeping them at room temperature. Once you’re finished with them, return them to your freezer to store.

3. Can essential oils be stored in plastic bottles?

Essential oils are incredibly powerful, which means that many oils will dissolve plastic. For this reason, it’s recommended to keep oils in glass bottles or stainless-steel containers. Keep this in mind when you make essential oil-based DIYs like DIY linen spray.

4. Do essential oils need dark bottles?

You’ll notice that all Young Living essential oils come in amber bottles. That’s to protect them from light, which can alter their delicate composition. We recommend always storing your essential oils in dark or opaque bottles to preserve their quality.

5. Do essential oils expire?

Essential oils don’t expire in the traditional sense. When stored properly, essential oils can last for years. But because of a process called oxidation, which begins the moment you open your bottle and expose the oil to the air, oils will gradually change over time. Following the suggestions mentioned above—storing oils in dark bottles, keeping them out of the sun, and storing them at room or cool temperatures—will help prolong the lifespan of your oils.

Before rubbery band-aids and grape-flavoured cough syrup, our ancestors relied on the simplicity of Mother Nature for healing. Many of our modern medicines were derived from properties and plants found in nature, so it only makes sense to incorporate essential oils—the highly concentrated essences of these powerful plants—into your first-aid kit! Add these first-response must-haves to your go-kit and treat a variety of uh-ohs the natural way.

Disclaimer: Unless otherwise specified, these tips are for aromatic or topical use. If you are planning on digesting any of the oils listed below, we highly encourage using the Plus dietary oils.

Rosemary

From kitchen staple to health must-have, Rosemary has a familiar herbaceous, sweet aroma with hidden healing properties, and is used to relieve joint or muscle pain associated with sprains, strains and rheumatoid arthritis.

To ease muscle and joint pain topically, dilute Rosemary oil according to the instructions on the bottle and add a few drops onto a warm compress, then apply over the affected area. As an alternate method, combine Rosemary oil with an unscented shower gel. Step into the hot shower, work into a lather, and spend extra time massaging into the places where you need pain relief. A few of our other favourite benefits of Rosemary are:

  • Providing a calming affect that relieves minor skin irritations, cuts, and bruises when used topically
  • Adding comfort while managing cold and cough symptoms
  • Providing relief from common digestive discomfort when inhaled or applied topically.

Lavender

A classic scent we can all recognize with a simple sniff, Lavender provides a calming floral scent that instantly sets us at ease. Yet, many are unaware of this flower’s additional properties! On days when you’ve had a little too much fun in the sun, Lavender can help soothe your skin.

In a spray bottle, add 1 cup distilled water, 1 tablespoon 100 percent aloe vera, and 3–4 drops of Lavender essential oil. Shake to mix and mist over skin.

 Lavender is also great for:

  • Relieving digestive discomfort
  • Easing joint and muscle pain associated with sprains/strains/rheumatoid arthritis
  • Creating a relaxing environment that can help relieve headaches
  • Using as a nervine/calmative to promote relaxation
  • Providing comfort during cough and cold symptoms
Lavender Essential Oil

Marjoram

Known as the “herb of happiness” by the ancient Romans and “joy of the mountains” by the ancient Greeks, Marjoram has a woodsy, spicy aroma that has a warm, calming effect that relieves minor skin irritations, cuts, and bruises.

Dilute equal parts Marjoram essential oil with a carrier oil, like V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex. Gently rub over affected areas. Other benefits of Marjoram include:

  • Providing a refreshing, cooling sensation when applied to joints and areas experiencing muscle pain associated with sprains/strains/rheumatoid arthritis
  • Enjoying a comforting aroma that promotes relaxation
  • Comforting those experiencing cold symptoms when inhaled or applied topically
  • Providing relief from common digestive discomfort
  • Soothing skin irritations when applied to areas impacted by eczema and dermatitis

Peppermint or Peppermint+

It’s cooling, invigorating, and distilled from one of the most highly regarded herbs on the planet: Peppermint essential oil has a fresh aroma that is known for soothing digestive discomfort.

After a meal, add 1 drop of Peppermint+ to your favourite tea and sip on away to reap its digestive health benefits. Alternatively, combine 1 tsp. of carrier oil with 4–5 drops of Peppermint oil and massage onto your abdomen or onto your scalp. Some of our other favourite benefits of Peppermint include:

  • Providing a refreshing, cooling sensation when applied to joints and areas experiencing muscle pain associated with sprains/strains/rheumatoid arthritis (always dilute before applying topically)
  • Creating a calming environment that promotes relaxation
  • Comforting those experiencing cold symptoms when inhaled or applied topically (after dilution)

Spearmint

Softer than Peppermint but with a similar minty scent, Spearmint is your go-to natural headache soother with a calming aroma. Just a few drops is all you need to soothe a pounding head.

Prep a comfortable space to lie down and rest. Add the oil to your diffuser (refer to your specific diffuser’s manual for drop quantities). Turn off the lights. Deeply inhale and exhale to bring your body to a state of relaxation. Spearmint has other benefits including:

  • Enjoying a comforting aroma that promotes relaxation
  • Comforting those experiencing cold symptoms when inhaled or applied topically (always dilute first)
  • Providing relief from common digestive discomfort

Bergamot

Cultivated in Southern Italy and used in the Middle East for hundreds of years, Bergamot is known for reducing the symptoms of acne and other skin irritants, leaving you with a youthful glow.

Add 1 drop of this uplifting oil to your favourite face wash or use as a spot treatment. Mix 1 drop of Bergamot with 1 drop carrier oil and apply to pimples. Leave on overnight. Bergamot is a photosensitive oil, so avoid direct sunlight for at least 12 hours after topical use and be sure to use sunscreen. Other benefits of Bergamot include:

  • Relieving minor skin irritations like burns, cuts, and bruises (always dilute first)
  • Providing comfort while experiencing cough and cold symptoms
  • Providing relief from common digestive discomfort
  • Soothing skin irritations when applied to areas impacted by eczema and dermatitis (always dilute first)
  • Enjoying a comforting aroma that eases symptoms of common headaches

Used as an herbal remedy for thousands of years, German Chamomile helps you connect with the calm. Known for creating a tranquil environment, it’s the perfect oil to have in your all-natural first-aid kit to bring comfort during times of stress.

Add this oil to a diffuser or place a drop in your hand, cup over your nose, and deeply inhale to enjoy its soothing benefits. Other ways German Chamomile is a great addition to your first aid kit include:

  • Soothing skin irritations when applied to areas impacted by acne, burns, cuts, and bruises (always dilute first)
  • Providing relief from common digestive discomfort
  • Creating a soothing environment that eases headaches
  • Relieving joint and muscle pain associated with sprains/strains/rheumatoid arthritis when massaged into tired muscles (always dilute first)

Sage

Known as “herba sacra,” or “sacred herb,” by the ancient Romans, Sage was traditionally used for its clarifying properties and ability to strengthen the senses while providing comfort from cough and cold symptoms.

Create your own DIY bath salts or mix 1 tablespoon of carrier oil with 5–6 drops of Sage. Add your mixture into a steamy bath, hop in, and deeply inhale the powerful Sage aroma and feel your body fall into a state of calm. Some other great benefits of keeping Sage in your first-aid kit include:

  • Soothing benefits that relieve joint and muscle pain associated with sprains/strains/rheumatoid arthritis when incorporated into a massage
  • Creating a calming environment
  • Relieving minor skin irritations like burns, cuts, and bruises
  • Soothing common digestive discomfort

Lemongrass

A fresh, lemony-scented oil distilled from woodsy Cymbopogon flexuosus grass, a cousin of Citronella, Lemongrass can act as a nervine and calmative that enhances relaxation. A few drops is all you need to soothe everyday nervousness and restore restfulness to the body.

In moments when you are feeling fatigued or need to invite calm into your day, dilute two drops of Lemongrass with two drops of carrier oil and massage onto your temples. Some other benefits of Lemongrass are:

  • Providing relief from common digestive discomfort
  • Neutralizing odours to help relieve headaches
  • Enhancing massages following physical activity to ease muscle and joint pain associated with sprains/strains/rheumatoid arthritis
